DSMC - Autofocus Mode

RED cameras offer a few autofocus modes in the Focus menu (Menu > Focus). The performance of these in-camera autofocus modes depends on the type of lens being used and the shooting conditions.

Newer DSLR cameras typically determine autofocus speed based on contrast detection and face detection. However, RED cameras determine autofocus based on contrast only.

Autofocus is more accurate when shooting high-contrast subjects in good lighting, rather than shooting a subject at infinity focus or in a dark, underexposed area.

RED recommends:

  • Use the autofocus modes as focus assist tools rather than tools for finding focus.
  • Use the Edge or Focus tools (Menu > Overlays > Tools) to improve focus accuracy.

Menu > Overlays > Tools > Focus
